A Victorian cameo brooch depicting a female charioteer surrounded by the twelve signs of the zodiac. This incredible cameo shell is expertly carved. The attention to detail shows in the unusual, east to west orientation of the shell, the use of natural color gradation to accent the scene of the piece and the clear attention given to the most minute detail. The Roman Goddess is a powerful theme, she is shown not in profile but in motion, being drawn along in her chariot driven by four magnificent rearing steeds. It is encased in a 9ct barley twist gold rope work border and hides a hinged pin and c clasp fitting.
